Position Poker Strategy

Position

Position in poker refers the order in which players are seated around the table and the related poker strategy implications. Players who act first are in "early position"; players who act later are in "late position". A player "has position" on opponents acting before him and is "out of position" to opponents acting after him. Because players act in clockwise order, a player "has position" on opponents seated to his right, except when the opponent has the button and certain cases in the first betting round of blind-structure games.

Late position has two advantages:
  • some early position opponents may fold
  • the probability of not having the best starting hand increases exponentially with the number of players in later position
  • late position players have more information to use in decisions. A player with position knows his opponent's act before acting himself
When in early position, many players raise their starting hand requirements to compensate for these disadvantages. As a result, fewer hands are played when in early position. Games where dealt cards determine the first player to act on each betting round are "non-positional" (e.g., stud poker ).
